Year End..

Well it's just about that time to put the wraps on 2008. As look back on things it was huge year for me in many ways, physically and personally. Of course the biggest was completing Ironman Coeur d'Alene back in June. A lot of work went into that and although I had a fantastic race day and recovered quickly, I feel my training could have been a little better on my part. (which is what I will take to next years Ironman Cozumel)

The last couple of weeks have been pretty good and getting some running done has seem to work out, even with Christmas thrown in there. Now I have a set plan and I am back at it to start the year off strong!

Along with that I did get a few things for Christmas to help out in the training department and I hear there is more on the way (CoachLiz). I look forward to working and training this spring and getting things set up for the start of IM Training, it will be tough but hey, no one ever said IM Training was easy!!!

Everyone have a great New Years, Be Safe and I'll see ya in 2009!!!

Running Zone

I remember yesterday as I was running, when I hit that certain stride, that certain HR and that certain rhythm, you all know what I'm talking about. When you're totally in the running zone and you feel as if you could run forever. When you don't even realize that you are running anymore and you are thinking about other things and enjoying just being outdoors. When I hit that zone I remembered that it takes work to get to that zone, that you have to work to get into that zone and when you reach it, it's self fulling.

I actually missed that part of training and it's good to have those feelings and memories come back. Not only that it was my first 8 mile run about 5 months! Let's see, I ran a 1/2 marathon back in August and that was without too much training coming off of Ironman in June but it was about 5-6 weeks so I was basically still lucky to hold my training base.

These days the running base is simply nill which means it's time to get it going again and things have been working well. Not only with my continuous running for a couple weeks now and my long run of 8 miles means that I can work on some longer week runs. Also in all this run training I am also back to the weights, core training and even other cross training using the elliptical trainer to burn come extra calories. I have put on a few extra pounds so that doesn't help my running speed but I know that will come back over continuous training so I'm not too worried about.

I am looking forward to this Christmas week and next weekend for a couple of extra days off from work.

Sweet!!. No wait, Bitter and Sweet!

On Sunday I was surfing around on the computer and came across some triathlon events listed here in California. As I was checking them out, I noticed the banner for Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco, June 14, 2009. I clicked on the banner and was taken to the home page. I read all the stuff and links and pull downs. When I got to the Registration tab I clicked on it and it said it was a Lottery drawing. I really didn't know it was a lottery type race but thought, what the hell. I filled out my information and clicked the submit button. It then said that the first drawing would be Monday, Dec. 15th and that results would be posted on Tuesday Dec. 16th. and the following:

"Applicants will be entered into each of the different pools that they are eligible for: The first drawing will be for triathletes who have competed in 5 or more years at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Those not selected will be added to the drawing for triathletes who have competed in 3 or more years at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Those not selected will be added to the regular random drawing for triathletes who have not completed at least 3 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. There will be special random drawing of one male and one female triathlete from each of the 50 states. There will be an international drawing for those triathletes who presently live outside the United States. All random drawing entries"

After the first drawing there is a second drawing in Feb. for anyone not picked (obviously). Anyway, I thought whatever, like I will get in based on the above criteria, so we shall see what happens but it would be cool to win!

Today in my email:

2009 Escape from Alcatraz- Random Drawing Winner!

Congratulations JOHN VIGIL! You are one of the exceptional triathletes that has been selected as a Random Drawing Winner for the 2009 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. As a Random Drawing Winner, you receive a slot in the 2009 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon to be held in San Francisco on June 14, 2009. You have until January 9, 2009 at 11:59 pm to register for the race and pay your registration fee. Your slot is non-transferable and will be void on January 10th. We recommend that you register right away to make sure that you are able to complete the process, don’t wait until January 9.

On June 14, you will get to jump off a perfectly good boat into the frigid water of the San Francisco Bay, swim with 2000 of your best friends from Alcatraz to Little Marina Green. You will climb out of the water and run (with or without shoes) one half mile to the transition area, jump on your bike and ride 18 miles (most people say that it is all up hill) and then run 8 miles under the Golden Gate Bridge, through the sands of Baker Beach, up the infamous sand ladder and back to Marina Green to the finish line. What a great way to spend the day!

Now as excited I was like, hell yea! Score!!! so I clicked the registration link and all of a sudden every ounce of excitement got sucked out and I slumped over. $400 registration fee! Are you freakn' kidding me? Nope they are not kidding. Now I must say that when I signed up on Sunday for the lotto entry I did not know it was $400. Come on! That's damn near an M-dot fee. I thought maybe $250 but $400.

After considering the options and yes, weighing in the fact that I won a lottery slot and may never win again, it is just crazy for me to pay $400 at this time for this race, so now my excitement of just winning the slot becomes BITTER SWEET! Would I do it if I wasn't doing Cozumel, probably without a doubt. It's close, I could drive up and it would be cool to join the ranks of Bigun himself, although I am not sure I could get the Buzz Light Year look alike pic like him, but it would be cool.

For the time I will enjoy the thought of winning a slot and hope that some day it will come around again and in the mean time continue to train on. As far as that goes, things are finally moving along and I have things working. I will be getting with my new swim coach on Jan 3rd and am excited to kick off the new year with some awesome hard grueling workouts to come.

Smooth South Paw.

The week is going good. Monday was a nice 3 mile run and although it seemed tough at first I just kept going. On Tuesday I was not sore any thing so I decided it I would run about 2 miles outside around the neighborhood and then head to the treadmill for some repeats.

It was weird at first running from outside to treadmill but I got used to it and was focusing on my times and working the machine. I ran 6 x 400's and was gassed by the 5th! Once finished I could feel my legs heavy and tired.

Today, I hit the weights and some elliptical trainer and after about an hour I was ready to be finished. Then I had this amazing idea to use this waxing product on my arms that I bought about 2 months ago.

I being with the left arm and everything is going good, super sticky of course and not so fun feeling when I have to rip the hair off myself (much better to pay to have this done as I ususally do but hey the kit was on sale for $5.) I quickly notice that I am going to run out of the rabid cloth they gave me in the kit and am left thinking Shit! But I am half way done with my left arm so I finish up and sure enough, No more Rabid cloths. I now have one nice smooth South Paw and Hairy right arm. Kind of funny really. Oh well, I will pick some more rabid cloths up tomorrow.

I have been attempting to wake up at 4am (i'm usually up by 4:45am) and head down to do some cardio but every time the alarm goes off at 4am I hit the snooze and dont wake up till 5:10am! then I am running late! Tonight I will set 2 alarms just in case b/c I want to head down and 20-30 mins on the elliptical again.

Who is that..

Hi everyone. Yes, I am still alive.. in some aspects..

The other day I heard this voice...

JTVoice: Hey JT, are you ever going to train again? Cuz I feel like crap these days and somethings not right..

JT: What.. who is that? GOD? Forumalic.. is that you calling me.. Hello..????

JTV: No silly, it's me, I'm right here. Just look. See. Right here....

JT: Hey! I see you! Where did you come from? How are you? wait.. Why are you talking to me?

JTV: Listen JT, all that is not important right now. If you must know, I have been here the whole time. Watching, listening, seeing, sleeping, resting. Everything you do, I DO. or more lately Everything YOU DON'T DO, I DON'T Do. And I have been wondering when are things going to change because we're putting weight on here and it's only going to make you slower than you already are?

JT: HEY!! OK, well, I know I have been saying I am going to change things but humm.. well.. Yeah, Your Right! It's time.

JVT: So what's the plan? Any thoughts?

JT: Yeah, I am thinking that Ironman Cozumel is something we need to do. And in training for that I need to work on losing that extra weight and getting overall faster. Which means I need to start now! Let's start today! Let's do it. I remember when training was fun and I liked it, come to think of I miss it. It's time! I want to do it now and enjoy it then we can start working toward some shorter run events and 1/2 marathons and full marathons. So this is it, we Start today!! No matter what. Things are changing now.

JVT: Yes! I like the plan and I like that you are thinking straight again. You were beginning to worry me there. I mean I understand a short break but come on! not months! We can't and will not do that again, especially if we are going to do Ironman Cozumel. Besides, don't you remember that a certain someone is coming after your time and when he gets it you will have to redeem it in Cozumel. So we start today! I'll be watching and taking notes so no slacking

JT: Sounds great.

Tic Tok..

As you can see by the count down on the right to IMCZ, today is 368 days but in JT reality it's 365 days from today that packing and leaving begins, most likely tomorrow (364 days) puts the real spin on the Ironman once again.

After seeing the IMAZ peeps rock it out, it only brings back memories that are still fresh on when I was 365 days out from CdA and the truth is it will go by so fast and be here before you and I both know it.

So instead of "its all down hill from here" my reality is "it's all UP HILL from here" for the next few months!

the time.

well it's not like I am in the swing of things but mostly just the swing of things. I go a couple days with getting some training done then I'm off doing something else or procrastinating. No one's fault but my own knowing that my mojo maybe didn't make it through the California State fruits, animals, plants and mojo training check point. (ha) Although I have seem to put on a couple of extra lbs, it makes me mad and uncomfortable and only reminds me of what I need to do to get it off. For the most part, I can't complain and if I do, only point the finger at myself, no worries.

So with a great IMAZ this past weekend is everyone ready for some good eating and relaxation? Oh, wait, I have been totally doing that already! Well for the rest of you, it's time for you to enjoy the winter season and the end of your tri season and maybe get ready for marathoning or something.

Hang in there ...

You have to work for things.

With the week ending or Friday at least, I have been able to get a few things.

First, I ran 2x this week! What? JT running or training for a marathon. My first run was on Tuesday and it was 4.5 miles, it felt good although I am super slow these days but I got it done.

On Wednesday, I was busy at work and just wanted to get out and run again so I grabbed my fuel belt and headed to the beach path and started running. Next thing I knew I was at 3 miles out, oh Crap! that meant 3 miles back, wait a minute, that's freakn' 6 miles today! Well no sense crying about it at mile 3 b/c the only way back to the car is to walk or run. By mile 5 I was tired and probably not really covered from the 4.5 I did the day before. I was actually thinking I really should not have come that far but you know what it was really good that I did. It brought back memories and reminded me of how you have to work for things out here. How you have to be mentally tough and want it! How you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. And this is exactly where I was, uncomfortable. I dug into that mental place in my mind and told myself it was ok, to just keep running even though my quads were sore and hurting from being out of shape. The sooner you get back to the car the sooner you get to rest so I kept running. It was a great run and I am glad I got it done.

Yesterday, I got home and mounted up the bike and off I went. I wanted to ride on the bike beach path farther than I had run on it to really see where it went. Luckily, there was another rider in front of me and I followed them for about 8 miles and then they peeled off. I finally got to a point where I was on this board walk and you had to walk your bike so I turned around and headed back which was about time as it was getting dark. On the way back I caught the Sun going down into the ocean and let me tell you, that is really something to see. I wondered why so many people pull up along the road and sit on the beach to watch the sun set and unless you are there in person, pictures just don't do it justice. It's amazing to see! After it was just about down I headed back and ended up with a 20 mile ride. It felt good to be out there once again.

Today, my quads are still sore and my neck is sore but all is good and I am feeling good that I have not let the week slip away.

Have a great weekend!!!

Never Settled In.

is the way things always work, right? You can never just settle in and everything falls in place, like clockwork. There's gotta be something that get's in the way and that is what has happened over this past week.

Really, I think it's just a matter of not setting specific details to get the job done and having a relaxed type of attitude which leads to detours, procrastination and change of plans. Training was doing pretty good for about a week and then this past week it was hit and miss but mostly seem to miss. Following right behind that was nutrition plan, oh wait, is it a plan if you are trying to eat good foods but just randomly pick and choose when to eat them or eat them only because they are about to spoil. Either way I don't think it's the best of plans.

This week I have put my foot down on JT and it will become the choice of foods and training and find that discipline that drives us when the count down is live and ticking on that upcoming race event! Oh wait, it is counting down on the right side over there!!!!

weeks out.

Where does the time go these days when your not worried about training for an event. I remember when training for CdA every day was planned with training, nutrition, sleep, recovery, etc. These days it seems you work, eat, sleep, and watch movies and the week is gone! Don't get me wrong I have been getting in a few workouts this week and looking forward to having Mr/Mrs. Formulaic come on down for some good entertainment but the time just goes.

The weekend have been just as busy and seem to go by even faster. Last weekend I went to Disneyland/California Adventure on Saturday, my first time ever! It was a blast! Walked all round all day and paid way too much for water and fruit but hey, It's the Happiest Place On Earth, right? Yea, until you look in your wallet and realize all your money is gone! HA! It was a great time and was super tired after 14 hours, I think it was worse than doing an Ironman. Then to top it off the next day I went to this Swap Meet early Sunday morning and were again walking around for another 4 1/2 hours! and I still had to run later that day. Crap, my legs were shot.

By the time the run came my legs just did not want to move forward and quite frankly I don't blame them. I got the time in but it wasn't pretty and I slept like a baby!

Have a great weekend......

Yes.. thats right.

If you happen to scroll down to the Grid Iron you will something that has not taken place on JT's blog for quite some time. Yup, that's right. Training! A few things have sparked the start of this new onset of training but mostly just because it's time to get off my ass and drop some weight for next year.

One of the other reasons I have started back is because on Feb 1st (Superbowl Sunday 2009) the Surf City Marathon is taking place and JT wants to be a part of it. Of course this is always a good reason, check out the finishers medal

So the deal is there is 16 weeks to get on the program and gear up for this little run. I am looking forward to it and also just to getting back out there and running.

Today while I was out there running I came up with a few things.

How do you know when you've been off of training too long:

1) Your heart rate monitor chest strap is uncomfortable and bothers you.

2) You don't remember which way out and back is on your route.

3) Your forget to press Start on your Garmin.

4) Chaffing brings on a new meaning!

5) Your Ipod play list is the beginning of the years Top 40 list.

Feel free to add any as you see fit. I thought it was funny that my HR strap was actually bothering me and my ipod had all this out date music. I am updating the ipod as I write this to get things back on track for a while.

It's good to have a plan and take the Risk..!!!

Risk

Nine days into October and I am barley posting. Where does the time go? Next thing you know it will be Cozumel time and I will be wondering how the day will turn out.

Life in the mean time doesn't slow down or stand still, esp. in a city like LA. Life on my end is always changing and lately just doesn't seem to want to fit in a comfortable pattern which leads me to hit and miss workouts and crappy eating. This week I have taken a stand against the crappy eating and cutting back on the drinking. It has to start somewhere and that's the best place to do it.

With changes means uncomfortable and uncertainty. Job, and training all play a part in this little circle and the worst thing about this is trying not to stress over things you don't have control over. You can feel useless and used or you can do your best and take a stand, either way the outcome is uncertain but life is made every day with risks and without those where do we go.

Lately, I have taken a lot of risk and not sure if it's been the best decisions but only time will tell and either way, good or bad, happy or sad, if I would have never taken the risk, I would be wondering what if...

hi..

For the last week or so settling into the new living area has been interesting. Just b/c you live by the beach, have great riding paved no traffic areas and a jr. Olympic pool doesn't mean your training every day. Matter of fact I have finally started to get into some sort of consistence and get some training done. OK, OK, I have only ran a couple of times and I rode my bike once but hey that is good considering it was the first, yes the first, bike ride since IMCdA!!!!!!!!!

Now I have been hitting my little workout gym which has some nice equipment so that has to count for something, right? I guess that just makes me feel better for the not so good eating choices that have been around since moving to LA area.

I can say that since things are more settled I am ready to get structured and get things on track. I was nice riding my bike the other day for just over an hour and exploring Manhattan Beach, (watch for the signs that say Walk Your Bike) b/c you will get a ticket if you ride across in certain areas!!! And the running along the beach path is always nice no matter what time of the day.

This weekend was a nice tailgate party and NCAA football game at the Rose Bowl. It was Fresno St. vs. UCLA. The Rose Bowl area is nice and the stadium is pretty darn big and if your there during the middle of the day like I was, there is minimal to no shade which made for a serious hot 3rd quarter!! I mean it was super backing hot! Good thing I hydrated on all those beers before hand, HA!!!!

as it goes..

Getting all moved in this past week and settled up was quite busy. Basically moved to a bigger apartment on Saturday morning, but wait let's back up to Friday night.

Friday night I started taking things over to the new bigger apartment b/c the 1 bedrm by the pool was just too small. So in the afternoon and evening I start moving some things. By about 7:30pm I see myneighbor from downstairs talking to his son in the parking garage and showing off his new motorcycle so I go say Hi and check it out. After talking with them for a few mins. I head back up to the apt for the night, which is about 7:45pm. Off to sleep and only to wake up at 6:50am to an email message saying my Bank account has irregular activity. I immediately hope on the computer and check things out and see that someone has hacked my bank account debit card, which has happened before in the past. So I go down stairs to the parking garage b/c I remembered I had my wallet in the car, (see where this is going) As I walk up to the car I basically see this:

and utter fuck! are you kiddn` me!! My passenger side window is smashed! I open the drivers door and immediately look to the back of my Murano as my Tri bike is still (thank God) in the back! I then look for my wallet and notice the glove box is open and then I see my wallet and Oakley's are gone! Bastards! So now I know why my bank account has been used. I go back upstairs and call the banks, all my credit cards and shut things down. 2hours later after calling the police to file a report over the phone, yes, over the phone, remember this LA there not coming out for a smash and grab I am done with all this nonsense. It was weird that I was talking to the neighbor and he was telling me that several people have had there cars broken into and a motorcycle was stolen from the "secured" parking garage. Not only that but this happened between 7:45pm and before 9pm b/c the first transaction on my bank account was at Trader Joes and they close at 9pm! So these were Health Conscious robbers, punks!

Bottom line they took my wallet with no cash in it but got my credit cards, tried using a couple but it didn't work and basically only got about $60 from my bank account which I will get back. They got my drivers license, ss card, picture of Pope John Paul ( I love that picture) and my sunglasses and few other things that are not to worry about.

It could have been worse, taking the bike, my Nike shoes, my ipod in the center counsel, and my check book. It cost my $200 to get the damn window fixed though and that was out of pocket being as insurance deductible is $500.

Welcome to California!!! (bitches..)

Finally got the apartment moved that morning and went to an Angels baseball game that night and hung out. What a day!

This week I have ran 2 times which is good, lifted weights along with some cardio and last night went to the Manhattan Beach Bikram Yoga which will be the new hot yoga home. That's some good stuff and although I am sore today I think I may go back tonight. Hey, its $30 for a week, intro price so gotta take advantage of it.

Disneyland 1/2 and August.

So with all the month of August totally gone so much as happened in just a few weeks. I got sick in relocating to LA I didn’t eat for about 2 days, it was bad. So stay away from any HAM at any deli side road stop.

Let’s talk about this apartment with the jr. Olympic swimming pool with the designated lap lane, the super awesome workout gym with nice cardio equipment and flat screens on each piece along with the Free Motion weight machines, Oh did I mention the ½ mile from the Beach!!! Nice biking lanes and roads all over the dang place, it’s a tri training heaven!!! And being as I have not done crap since Ironman it’s time to get back with it during the 70 degree days, yes, the weather is totally awesome!!

Now with all this stuff going on I didn’t forget that the Disney ½ marathon was this past weekend and I was also signed up for the 5k run on sat. So I ran through Disneyland/California Adventure parks which is totally cool and knocked out that 5k with lots of fun and got a little Toy Story Finishers rubber medal. One of the great things is that I went to the Expo on Friday night and got really cool free stuff to see and do, the sales on running stuff.

Race: On Sunday I got to the race site, parked and tried looking for my dad also running but that was just not going to happen as there was well over 15,000 people. You were grouped based on your submitted pace at registration into corals and I was in Group B which left at 6am start. Standing there I realized I forgot my Chip and was not going to have any official time other than Garmin but it was way too late to worry about that, so no time for JT per Disneyland. The run went off and the humidity was up but things were going well. Around mile 6 I was getting tired and realized I had a long way to go so quit thinking about that. I took plenty of water/poweraid at the stops and basically walked the aid stations unless my HR got too high in between but that didn’t really happen till after mile 10. By mile 11 I was really getting tired and just hung in there for mile 12 as I knew I was close to finishing. The last couple of miles you are back running through Disneyland so that takes your mind off things and it’s fun.

Overall a Great Venue and fun to run. The course is pretty much flat expect for the couple of overpasses you have to cross. Running around Angel Stadium is cool and in and out of the parks is fun too. The best thing though is the Finishers Medal! Nice and Big and Flashy.!! The post race stuff is pretty much standard so not too much bragging there but oh, a Nice Sweet tech shirt in the goody bag and this Glade Electrical air freshener thingy, its cool. My overall Garmin time was 2:42 and I was about 3-4 mins off clock time, so not too bad for running a 5k on Saturday and then 13.1 on Sunday with absolutely No training what so ever since IMCdA! Not the smartest thing to do though. My right foot was quite sore on Monday and my quads were sore as well but not as bad as I had expected. (Pics to come) AS for everything else, well, it’s just working…

I am alive..

Yes, it's true, it's true.. JT has been busy hanging on to his job and so far it's working. They have been keeping me busy, which is good for now. Although not much training has been happening I have not fault but my own for that as I have found other EXCUSES not to do anything. I know it will end at some time and until then I will just enjoy what ever I do or don't do.

I did do this though, HOT YOGA this Sunday. No I was not outside in the Vegas sun, I was in LA and let me tell you it, beside from it being a Yoga class, it was HOT! DUHH!, HOT Yoga!! I was placed about 10 feet from the Heater and this thing was cranking out the heat every 10-15 mins. At times it was so hot in there the instructor even opened the doors to let some cool air in! The Class was totally great and I enjoyed all of the 90 mins sweating over every inch of my body. Although the Right picture demonstrates my best position, HA! I was able to do some better than others and even found all my restrictions. I thought I should have done a few classes before IMCdA as this stuff really helps in overall motion and flexibility but hey, I got the job done any how!

Other than keeping busy, things are changing for JT and for the good but don't want to say too much and jinx myself so for now, just know things are going well and are getting better!

1st.. of Aug..

Dang where have I been? Well I cannot lie as Formulaic will totally rat me out, I've been lazy and preoccupied with things at work. Yes, really, work has been crazy.

Long Story short: a major hotel/casino stopped building b/c lack of $$ so that put about 2000+ out of work over night and the company I work for had a lot of material to supply to that job so that in turn knocked a few people off there feet in the company and they let some go. So far I am still working for them but I hear I am on the "Block" so time will tell.

In other news .. wait.. what other news, JT doesn't have any. It's just been work, relax and watch movies. Disney 1/2, yes I know.. it's coming.. I will probably crawling to the end but it's about having fun that's all.

Oh wait there is new News.. IRONMAN COZUMEL !!! This looks like a sweet thing to do and I know I was looking to head down to IMAZ 2009 but I think that just got bumped!

Where...

in the heck have I been? Lost, procrastinating, lazy, or just blowing it off. Training that is. Is this bad? Could be, with Disney 1/2 Marathon in about 4 weeks and my runs have been short to non-existent!! Not only has it been seriously Hot here in Sin City, although that could be just an excuse being as Formulaic and Stef are out training but work has been pretty busy and quite honestly I have been enjoying my time off.

I know I can't stay off forever and I need to get back on the game but for some reason the summer has cooked my motivation. On another note, I am scheduled to take my NV. Chiropractic Exam next month and that has a little bug in the back of my mind saying I need to get in gear and study!

So for the mean time I am enjoying it day by day and things are working for the better which is all anyone could ask for. Well we could always ask for more but then we usually find our selves asking for too much!

I can say today that all is good and JT is in much better mood and spirits thanks to certain aspects in life.

is that what was needed? Wait, I have been off training for some time following CdA and after last weekend while riding with Formualic you would think I would be back in the saddle, But not really.

I basically took it easy this weekend and just enjoyed the time. Not much to report.

So this weekend we have some running to get done and get through the ugly heat out here! Yuk! Like running with a Blow Dryer pointing at you! I really need to get some more swim time in and head to the master class but it seems repeated emails among Formulaic find him again wanting to wear his water wings and noodle while swimming with this group.. humm.. I mean I just swam with him last week in some nice choppy Lake Mead water and he was zooming through it like a proficient little guppy dropping me easily (this guy's swim has improved so don't let him fool ya!) I think this is his master plan, to conceal all his swimming and biking sessions from me and than he is going to be this WILD FAST ASS BANSHEE on the next race.. I have ran with him but I hear he is burning up the road there too. This is Sin City and I think he is totally lying about his capabilities and training these days.. the bloody bastard!!

Anyway, enough about that.. I must focus, focus.. wait.. oh it's lunch time.. Gotta go..!!!!

Activity.

The weekend finally brought some activity which turns out to be well deserved. After 3 weeks off it was time to get back on it and I headed out to Lake Mead with Formulaic crew and Stef.

First up was a little lake swim. The water was really warm and probably mid 70's. It felt good to swim with out the wet suit, neoprene and booties. The water was a little choppy and while swimming it back even worse. I was swimming along thinking, this sucks! CdA was way better!! and Why am I grudging through all this now, I have completed my "A" race for the year, ha! what a baby, huh. After about 20 mins I was back heading towards the shore when I met up with Stef and waited for Form to finish up. It was a nice swim and good to be back in the water.

Then we all changed out and headed out for a bike ride. Mrs. Form and Stef had different times and distances and turned around before Form and myself. My Heart Rate was proving to be seriously high and I was wondering what was going on. I felt great. My legs felt great. It was a little hotter than normal but overcast and for Vegas area, the humidity was high so those might have been factors. Once at the 20 mile turn around my Garmin said 1 hour 28 mins. So I asked Form if we were negatively splitting it on the way back. He said YEA! and took off! Well allrighty then, so I was riding behind him for a little and than the downhill came and that's where I made my move. I passed him (sorry Form) and never looked back, oh wait, I did look back for you Form but I couldn't see ya.. Anyway, I cranked and pushed and rode in a higher HR than normal but again feeling good. I rolled back at the start in 1 hour 7 mins (oh ok, the distance was 39.65miles) So a good negative split even if I was just shy of the 40 mark. I was pretty happy with it.

Once Form got back and threw his helmet at my feet in utter disgust of my time he jumped back in the water cuz I guess he felt faster there, i'm not sure.. haha.. Step had to go and Mrs. Form had already headed back to the house. Once Form was done splashing around we headed to house for brew and chill time.

The rest of the day was spent relaxing at my house. On Sunday, I was able to get on the treadmill for some interval runs followed by some jump rope, push ups, core work and jump squats. Let me tell you, JT is WEAK! Today I am sore from all that so that only means one thing, I'm Weak! It's time to get back to the gym and resistance training.

Have a great day...

The train is moving..

again and this weekend it's moving my lazy butt off the couch and no activity list as I will be heading out with Formulaic on Saturday morning for his little planned mini-tri that's probably gonna leave me feeling like a slow wicked step child!

I won't say what the guy has in mind but let's just say I am trying to add to it! Ha!!!

Have a great weekend and be safe..

Whats up..?

Another week has gone by and I still really have not done much of anything but enjoy the 4th of July with some beers and chips and other food. I have been watching my weight and luckily I am still constant but that really makes no sense considering I have been a lazy blob.

With 8 weeks to go till the Disney ½ Marathon I guess I should be running but wait, it’s hotter than Hades here and that’s just no fun. Not that Disney on Aug 31 won’t be hot but I think I am just being lazy. So I will get back to doing some stuff this week and this weekend.

Looks like I will be heading out this weekend with Formulaic for a little swim and bike, which will be good as I can show him what it’s like after IM and prove I still got the fitness.. lol.. ya right! I’ll be lucky to float in the swim and coast downhill..

A short post for now..

The Return..

Well after getting back on Tuesday I have been in recovery mode. Totally in recovery mode. I've been on the couch more time this week that total time since I have owned the couch! I have been eating pretty good too and sleeping well. Today is the first day that I don't feel any soreness and although I have felt like doing some sort of exercise I have refrained.

On a great note, I have signed up to volunteer for IMAZ 08 in Nov and look forward to going down and seeing Momo and family as well as some of the Outlaws cranking it on the course. Humm.. and maybe JT will be looking to sign up for Nov. 2009!.. we shall see.

I have finally downloaded some of my pictures and will look to post them in a day or two. So what's next for Iron JohnnyTri.. In reflecting more about my race day the first thing is obvious. I need to get faster everywhere. The swim part I will take to the pool with a local masters group. This will probably be my main focus for the next few months leading up to Soma! Oh! Did I say that out loud? Ya, I am going to look to sign up for it in a few weeks if it doesn't sell out and also look to sign up for the Disney Marathon in Jan 09.

There is lot's to do and although my Ironman is done I really think I have been bit by the IM BUG as I'm wishing I would have signed up for Cda 09, like a few other bloggers have but I wont mention any names just yet until they reveal themselves! Hint:
They are local to my area. HA!

This coming week I will also be looking at some iron in the weight room. Something that I have not seen for a long time and should enjoy the change of pace.

Have a great weekend...

I'm Back..with the Recap.

YAHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! I am an IRONMAN!!!! I MADE IT!!!

Many thanks to all you watching and cheering me on! It was a long day but I got the job done in 15 hours 26 mins.

Once getting there on Thursday night, it was simply check in in to motel and get to sleep. Friday, morning I was up and down at the Gatorade Swim. As I got in the water it was really cold, temp. then was 55*. As my hands were totally frozen, I realized this was going to be more of a problem as my body and face adjusted quickly to the water and I was able to swim a little. I was in the water about 30 mins and was fine. The rest of Friday I basically put my bike together and did packet/registration pick up. Later that day in the afternoon I meet up with S. Baboo and the gang and had waited so long to eat that I was Starving and we all stopped in at Outback and had a great dinner! Afterwards, I went back to the motel and I feel asleep from 5:30-9:30pm! I woke up for about an hour and slept till Saturday morning.

Saturday, I was back down at the Gatorade swim with the water a little warm, about 59* which was better. After swimming I found S. Baboo and Misty and was able to meet TriGreyhound, a fellow Texan and area Houstonite. Soon after we were walking around and ran into Bigun/Di and a few of the other New Mexico Outlaws. After a hanging out for just a little, I had to head out as I was hungry again and I had to get all the stuff ready for checkin.

I got things ready and  I headed down to bike check in and once all situated I headed to catch the WORST MOVIE EVER!
so do not waste your time or money on The Happening, because it was NOT! Worthless. Enough said. After the bad movie we got some noodles for dinner and it was off to bed around 9pm.

Sunday, morning I was up at 4:30am eating pre-race PBJ's. I think I have done this so many times that I was kind of burnt out on eating them. I got down to the race site about 5:30am and of course it was busy. I got body marked and went to get my bike settled in and repack a couple of things in the bike and run bags. Then it was off to get ready for the swim. I got my wetsuit on and had minor freak out when I thought I forgot my Neoprene head cover but then found it on the bottom of my triathlon bag, whew.

SWIM: 1 hour 56 mins

I got in the water and got used to it with no problem. I then came out of the water with about 3-4 mins before the start. I aligned myself WAY Right of the swim buoy, I mean I was like 100 meters off the main swim line and let me tell you it was the best thing! The gun goes off and everyone crashes into the water! Amazing! Music going, Mike Riley calling the scene! It was truly amazing, I only wish I could have seen it from the spectator side. As I went into the water I started swimming and aimed for the "v" in the mountain side and just kept swimming. I didn't really run into any other swimmers or them into me. I was actually an easier swim than some of the sprints or Olympic I have done! Once making the turn to come back in I was thinking, Hey, not too bad. As I approached the shore and stood up, Mike Riley yells "John Vigil from Las Vegas, NV" and I make the turn and head to the 2nd loop, which I wasn't able to swim as wide b/c the kayaks kept the swimmers a little more close together and therefore created a little more bumping at the turn points. Overall not bad at all though, I've had way worse Sprint and Olympic swims. (I talked to a few guys on the plane and they swam the main line and said it was a complete Washing Machine Effect with the ability to Survive!) As I approached the shore the Ford Ironman Arch could not come quick enough. As I got out there again was Mike Riley yelling, "John Vigil from Las Vegas, your on your way to becoming and Ironman!" and as I went past him on the beach he leaned out and gave me a Knuckle bump! Yeah!!!! My Swim time was right within my projected time frame. I would have like to have been about 10 mins faster but I figured with the calf cramp I swam with on the 2nd loops for about 1000 meters slowed me down but no worries, I am happy with my Swim!

T1:

T1 was great with wet suit strippers. Just lay down and yank! Off the suit came and I was off to get my Swim-Bike bag which was already waiting for me as the volunteers saw me coming, had yelled down the line to others and had the bag ready. I grabbed it and headed to the tent only to notice several people sitting in the Hot Tubs trying to regain warmth from the swim and unfortunately they did not look good. As I got the entrance of the change tent I heard Jenn yelling at me! It was great to see her there and I smiled and went it in. Again another volunteer was there who grabbed my bag, asked me about my swim and basically dumped everything on the ground and started handing me stuff. It was Great! "Anything you don't need leave in the bag and leave right here, we will pick it up and put it back for later." How great is that? I got dressed and headed out to my #8 rack where my bike was. As I was almost there I heard Jenn, Di, Dwayne and others all yelling!! Go Johnny, Hurry Up. I was so excited I saw the #8 rack and turned in and next thing I know I am on the wrong side of the rack looking for my bike, LOL. So I ducked under the rack and grabbed my bike with everyone still yelling and LOL at me, HURRY!!!! I take off to the mount line and I am on my way, Kinda.

Bike: 7 hrs 8 mins (avg.15.7 mph)

As I hit the mount like I clipped in and pushed off only to notice the chain fell off! So I quickly fixed it and was all greasy. I pushed off and went around the corner only to realize that I had not put my Garmin on my wrist as it was hanging on my aerobars so once again I stopped and put it on my wrist and took off. Once on my way I was began drinking some Gatorade and tried to settle down into my rhythm. I made the turn around was back in town heading out to the far end of the course where the fun really begins. I was steadily drinking and eating my Fig newtons but they were just going down smoothly so I switched to all the shot blocks which seemed to be working. Once the rolling hills started I tried to make sure to keep drinking Gatorade on the recovery part as I knew the next one was coming. There were a couple of really climbers and made you work to get the top or crest of the hill but only to find it somewhat levels off and begins a gradual climb to the actually crest, yikes! After the first round of rollers I was heading back into town and feeling great as I made the last little dog leg turn by transition and came upon the TriBlogger Group which included Jenn. I am glad they all wore the same shirts as this made it easy to find them on the course during the day. I yelled at them as I passed, made the turn and quickly came back upon them as they all lined the street taking pictures. It was nice to see them and hear them cheering but it was quickly back to work on the 2nd loop. Once at Special Needs I stopped and ate my Pringles, basically took a couple of minutes to eat and stretch. I had to goto the bathroom but there was a line so I went up the road where there was a couple of port o cans on the run course and a couple of volunteers held my bike while I ducked in and went, no lines, no waiting! I was off and pedaling again through town and back to the hills. By this time my legs were a little more tired and I noticed the hills were not coming as easy as they were the first time but I was still hanging in there. On the nasty climber hill I could see some people walking up the shoulder and as I approached I told myself I was not walking/pushing my bike up that hill so SUCK it up and crank it. Whew, it was work the 2nd time but I made it and then started counting the last of the little climbers till I was back heading into town. At one point around mile 80 me and others got passed or lapped by the leaders like we were standing still. It's amazing how fast they bike!! As I enjoyed my last few miles on the bike I was working on the fig newtons and a couple of gels to make sure I had enough going into the run. I made the last little dog leg turn and was looking for the TriBlogger team but they had moved so I pushed it to get off the bike. It was really interesting how on the 2nd loop my HR had came down and I was running in my low Z2 which was great going into the run. At one time I even thought about pushing my HR up to the top of Z2 and riding faster but the legs were comfortable working at that pace/speed. End of the bike and glad to be done as I had to use the bathroom again.

T2:

Pretty easily in and out. Used the bathroom and changed. The volunteers once again were right there to help with EVERYTHING! I took just a little time to clean my face and as I started walking out of the change tent my right foot was numb and not wanting to walk but more of that on the run.

RUN: 6 hrs 9 mins (pace avg. 14:06/mi)

The run course is completely beautiful along the water and through a little part of the town, it's amazing. I started down the park right out of transition and my right foot was basically asleep but hurting while walking. I tried running and it felt better but coming off the bike my legs were not really ready to run. As I went by Special needs on the run I say TriBloggers all sitting on the wall and they started cheering. I continued to run and made the short turn around by the park and picked up my special needs run stuff; sports run, red bull, band aids, and Pringles! I came upon the group again and everyone cheered! So right before this I hit the aid station and you catch this first station fast and twice as its a short turn out of T2. I was pretty hungry coming off the bike and so I grabbed a lot of stuff through this aid station but only to realize I over did it and started to pay the price for the next several miles. By now my foot was working fine but the stomach was not. It wasn't bad really just a little upsetting as I ran, so I would run for a short period, than walk, and run. I did this for basically the 1st half of the run. I saw Bigun and we were both playing the stomach upset game but making head way. As I finally made the 13.1 miles I decided to drink my red bull as coke was working for me. Just after drinking the Bull, my stomach settled and I was off and running at a nice steady pace. I felt great! Miles 14-21 were really good. The sun went down and it was totally beautiful on the run near the lake. I really looked around and I remember this well as I knew I was going to finish so I wanted to remember as much as I could. After mile 21 I had to start really thinking about running and keep moving. By mile 24.5 I came upon a group of partyers that were in the middle of road, drinking beer, dancing and having a blast cheering us back of the packers on. I was excited to be this close to the finish so I stopped and said "Hey, you guys have a beer I can drink? The guy goes, are you serious? I said hell ya! So he hands me a beer and I start drinking it right there! It was so GOOD! They are all yelling and saying, this guy is an Ironman!!! I go to hand it back to him and he said to just take it so I said thanks and started running. Just around the corner there was an aid station and I finished up the beer and pitched the bottle with a couple of the volunteers asking Where I got that from and laughing! with a Way to go! Just after this I caught up to a gal I had been playing the run-pass game with over the last few miles and we decided to walk a little and then run the last little bit to the finish line, however, by the time she was ready to run wasn't so I told her to press on and I would be coming slowly. At mile 25.75 the volunteers were saying "Just around the corner and there's pizza at the finish!" I even told them, you better not be lying or I am coming back to get you, lol.. I was so FREAKN` Hungry!! As I made the left turn I could see the Finish Arch but it was still a little ways off. I walked just another block and then started running!

FINISH

As I started running I could hear Mike Riley yelling and the crowd cheering. It was exciting but almost like a dream. I have watched it several times via web cast and remember the lights, the people, the cheering, the voice of Mike and now it is all so REAL. As I approached the end of the chute where everyone was lined against, it go so LOUD! I mean really loud! I started smiling and was feeling amazing, someone stuck there hand out on my left side and I went to slap hands and next thing I know EVERYONE DOWN THE ROW had there hands out!! Amazing! I looked to my right but there was so many people I the cheering group on the edge yelling at me as well. I saw the finish line tape and just completely smiled as I crossed. I was so excited about everything I didn't even hear Mike R. say Your an Ironman but I remember the volunteers grabbing me, giving me my finishers medal and saying how great I was to be an Ironman. I then got my finishers t-shirt and hat and was at the end of the finishers area. I then walked straight to the FOOD! I grabbed a lemon lime soda and 2 pieces of veggie pizza and a couple of cookies. I was so happy to see the fellow bloggers at the food area. They gave me lots of big smiles, high fives and hugs! I then was able to meet Duane and take some picture and then had to leave as I headed for more pizza and my bike run gear.

I am sure there will be more thoughts but Overall this race Kick ASS!! The course is beautiful and the volunteers are wonderful. The area is amazing and I would definitely recommended this race as a first time Ironman for many reasons!

I Want to Thank everyone for being out there all day! The Triblogger crew was up at 5 am and was there at the finish. They Rocked!!

Below is another pictures that Duane took, more to come as Di took some as well.

I'm tired, gotta go nap..
